Devotional Guide for the Week of 5-8-22
Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9
1. Deuteronomy 6:4 is the famous “Shema” because the word “Hear” in Hebrew is “shema.” This verse was a daily prayer for ancient Israel, both in the morning and evening. The verse is the foundation of monotheism, “The Lord is one” and a constant reminder to people of faith to love God.
2. Compare Deuteronomy 6:1-9 with Exodus 20:1-4. How do the practices of the first four commandments support the commandment to love God with all your heart, soul, and strength?
3. The Hebrew word for “heart” is “lebab” and can be translated as the inner person—the mind and will as well as the heart. What is the first thing that comes up for you when you think of loving God with your mind? Your will?
4. The Hebrew word for “soul” is “nephesh” and can be translated as the self, person, desire, passion, appetite, and emotion. What comes up for you when you think of loving God with your “soul”?
5. What activities or practices would you like to implement in your life to more deeply love God?
